Garage Door Replacement and Repair

Garage Door Repair

A number of things can go wrong and necessitate a garage door repair. Garage door parts may break or wear down. Alternatively, the garage door opener may be to blame for a door that doesn’t work. Sometimes the only option is a full garage door replacement.

Some Basics of Garage Door Repair

Usually, when a garage door doesn’t work, the problem can be fixed with some minor repair. Garage door issues can be uncovered with close examination. First, look at the tracks inside the garage to see if they’ve come loose or are dented. Tighten any loose screws and use a rubber mallet to smooth out crimped or dented metal.

If this is not the problem, check the tracks to be sure they are level. Uneven tracks can be leveled by loosening the screws or bolts holding the brackets in place, then tapping the tracks into alignment and tightening the screws. Check with a level to be sure they are even.

Cleaning and Lubrication in Garage Door Repair

Sometimes, a malfunctioning door may not actually need repair. Garage door parts can become corroded or obstructed by dirt and grease. Simply cleaning the tracks with a concentrated household cleaner may loosen dirt and hardened grease, thereby fixing the problem.

If that doesn’t work, try lubricating the tracks with a lubricant spray or powdered graphite. Household oil or silicone spray can also lubricate garage door rollers. Don’t forget the pulleys; they may need to be cleaned and lubricated as well.

When to Consider Garage Door Replacement

After checking for proper alignment, repairing any loose or dented parts and cleaning the workings of your garage door thoroughly, you may find that your door still doesn’t work properly. Garage door repair can be expensive if you need to call a professional, but it may cost less than a garage door replacement. Consider getting a second opinion before replacing your garage door.
